Hello fellow Bostonians! I have lived in Boston for three years for college, and next year I am moving back on campus because of the horrible property managment companies that suck away your money, and the old apartment buildings that leak gas. Can someone please let me in on where the best apartment buildings are......what are somewhat reasonably priced...talking $900-1,300 a month? I need something in the Back Bay area...possibly for Jan. Thanks !

Jen,
I can't really tell you where to live, but I can tell you who NOT to rent from: Equity Management. I lived at Granada Highlands for 5 months and had to break my 1 year lease because I had a "peeping Tom". This freak would watch me through binoculars in the day and at night and admitted to doing it. I called the police and have documented complaints against this guy. HE STILL LIVES THERE!
I did not feel safe at all living there and thought it best to break my lease. They kept my security deposit and still think I owe them $4000. based on some magical formula they came up with.
Ladies, don't live at Granada Highlands.
(O.K., I'm done with my rant)
I don't know what you'll find in Back Bay for that price. Can you live in Southie? It's one of the last "cheap" places to live. My other recommendations would be Davis Square Somerville, JP, Inman Square Cambridge. Check out boston.craigslist.org or bostonapartments.com.
Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Can I suggest Beacon Realty on Newbury St (I believe that is the name). Give them a try! They are pretty nice. I helped couple of foreign exchange students come here and they seem to like them so far.

Also, forgot to add....Back Bay is a very nice, some parrts very posh and safe place to live. It can be very expensive and most students can only afford studios. Good luck to you. As an aside, the nicest and most expensice places to live that are safe are Brookline, Back Bay, Cleveland Circle and some parts of Jamaica Plain and Brighton. Be weary of places in Roxbury, Dorchester, East Boston and South Boston.

Davis Square in Somerville is on the up and up too. And right on the Red Line. As is Porter Sq. in Cambridge. I've lived all over Beantown, from Brigton to Roxbury and Back Bay to Cambridge and everywhere in between. Somerville is my favorite so far.
